reduce plastic use

Want a sturdy alternative to PE and PLA-laminated cups? Well, a cup containing less than 0.76% plastic is right here!  Instead of a plastic lamination, the Melli cup uses water-based coating technology for the paper cups.

It’s printed like water-based ink, allowing it to be absorbed into the paper fibres rather than sitting on top as an additional layer. This reduces the amount of material needed – while still providing the same leak and grease-proof benefits as other types of coatings and laminations. 

SUPD compliance and

transparency first

We strive to drive innovation and always maintain high levels of transparency with our customers. The Melli cups contain less than 0.76% plastic as certified by Flustix. However, we have decided to have the "plastic in product" symbol affixed in accordance with the EU Single-use Plastics Directive. 

Water-based coated cups are a breakthrough towards increasing sustainability and decreasing plastic use in disposable items. While the Melli cups contain far less plastic than typical PE and PLA laminated alternatives, they do contain small amounts (max. 0.76%) of polymers and additives to form an effective liquid-resistant barrier.  

The presence of polymers and additives along with the coating technology employed has led to some debate between authorities, manufacturers and brand owners across EU markets on declaring water-coated paper cups as plastic-free. Our SUPD approach ensures legal compliance – making it easy for customers to stay compliant while reducing plastic content in disposable products.
