PFAS were often used in the industry on bagasse and other fibre materials as they prevented oil or grease from leaking out of food packaging. However, there is now increasing evidence against the use of PFAS. This has led to regulations being issued regarding its use, as well as an increasing number of national bans.

From 1 January 2024, we will completely discontinue the manufacture of products to which PFAS is added. To ensure clear and transparent communication, we have changed the article numbers of the affected products.

The organisers of the Sweden Rock Festival wanted to make a change, they wanted to make their festival more sustainable and create a very special recognition value:

‘Food packaging has to be sustainable and this is especially true for festivals. We started to do without single-use plastics in 2019. In 2022, we finally replaced the plastic cups with paper cups made from sugar cane. That was important to reach our current standard.’

The Sweet and Breeze cups have become a hit at Sweden Rock Festival. With the Pistonhead's unique branding, numerous cups filled with beer, soft drinks, wine and much more were handed out to the 40,000 visitors.

What is PFAS?

PFAS (Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a large and complex group of +10,000 identified substances can repel water and grease as well as withstand high temperatures. Although PFAS is widely used in anything from raincoats to frying pans and firefighting foam; it’s been uncovered as a “forever chemical” that can contaminate soil and water.

PFAS in food packaging

PFAS is widely used for food packaging, and chances are you’ve both used and consumed food from them. Furthermore, PFAS has been an industry standard for bagasse products due to its ability to prevent oil and grease from leaking through food packaging.

PFAS regulations in 2024

The now-known effects on people, the environment and ecosystems have led to public concern and legal repercussions. This includes a PFAS ban in Denmark, proposed PFAS limits (PPWR) and a proposed restriction from the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) spearheaded by Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, Finland and Germany.

It's safe to say that PFAS is creating a bit of a split. And we want to help you navigate the complex legal landscape without having to second-guess your food packaging's legality, safety or functionality.

Bagasse is a sustainable and rapidly renewable material with a low carbon footprint. While bagasse is a great material for food packaging – it needs grease and water-repellant agents to keep your tacos, burgers, pasta and saucier salads from leaking through.

Through extensive research and development, we’ve developed an alternative oil-based barrier solution to replace the PFAS additives previously used. The shift away from PFAS has resulted in new performance profiles and recommended uses for our bagasse products. As such, it’s important that you pair your food with the right products

How we create sustainable food packaging

You may be considering whether to offer RE-Dine or our Relevo returnable option. Both options have their own advantages and disadvantages, so it's important to consider which option is best for your business.

RE-Dine is a sustainable packaging solution made from recycled materials. It is designed so that it can be used multiple times before being recycled again. By offering RE-Dine to your customers, you reduce the amount of single-use plastic waste generated in your business.

With our Relevo reusable option, on the other hand, customers can return the packaging to your company for reuse. This option not only reduces waste, but also allows you to build a customer loyalty programme around sustainability. Customers feel good about returning their packaging because they know they are contributing to a more environmentally friendly food offering.
