The Notpla coating used for Alga is made from natural seaweed. As the packaging material is void of any chemical modification, it’s one of very few alternatives recognised as plastic-free under the Single-Use Plastic Directive (SUPD) and the Dutch Government.

From the forests below the sea comes our greatest ally: Seaweed. It grows quickly and needs no freshwater, land or fertiliser. It captures carbon and makes the surrounding waters less acidic. Beyond this, seaweed is abundantly available.

When used as a coating for food packaging, it creates a barrier to oil and grease, ensuring leak-free transport and use for a whole range of our favourite foods and takeaway meals. To add another layer to the sustainability cake: it carries a much lower carbon footprint compared to conventional plastic linings or coatings.
